Eudora Montoya is the most well recognized potter from Santa Ana Pueblo. It was she who, in 1972, began teaching Santa Ana women the art of pottery making. She had 17 students in her first class. Only 5 or 6 of them continued making pottery.
Although her pottery was traditional in materials and construction, generally her designs were creations of her own. In this jar, she placed what appears to be a katsina face as the main element of design—note the eyes and the wide red band which usually represents a mouth below which is a hanging beard as seen here. A large wide rainbow encompasses the katsina face. This design is repeated on both sides of the jar.
The vessel is in original condition. The artist signed her name and pueblo in cursive script.
Provenance: From a collector from Bernalillo, NM who purchased it directly from the potter in the late 1980s.
