Lucy Lewis was one of the most widely respected potters from her pueblo. This wonderful jar is testimony to her talents. As is traditional, it was constructed of native Acoma clay and hand coiled, then sun-dried and sanded to a smooth surface, after which a white slip was applied to the entire vessel and polished to a high sheen. The design was painted over the slip, and the vessel was then fired.

The design on this jar is one of the most exquisite she ever painted. It fits the shape of the vessel and has just the right mixture of orange and brown for contrast. Lucy was very talented in designing and executing the finished product. This is one of her best.
