This is a superb late work from Acoma Pueblo, dating to circa 1930. The traditional elements of Acoma Polychrome are present in this vessel, orange-red underbody, rag-wiped white slip, red neck interior, and black rim top. This olla is typified as a late work by the high shoulder, short neck, and absence of flexure at the transition from under- to mid-body, the puki line here being non-extant. The paired framing lines are solid throughout the circumference—ceremonial breaks are absent.
This potter did not resort to meaningless design, but expressed realism by combining the elements of esthetic and intellectual appeal. She chose a naturalist theme—combining mountains, rain, and floral elements. She was bold and versatile in the use of line and color and this piece possesses sophistication and subtlety. It is at once classic and modern.
This exquisite design, in an overall format with elements confined in the zoned design style, is reminiscent of the Art Deco designs of the 1920s. The uncluttered placing of the elements and the clean straight and curved lines contribute to the elegance of the jar.
