Seferina Ortiz has always been one of the most sought after potters who specialized in making storyteller figurines. It was a sad day when we learned that she passed away in May 2007. Her legacy continues through her children—Virgil Ortiz, Joyce Lewis, Mary Janice Ortiz, and Inez Ortiz.
We are fortunate to have one of her storyteller figurines at this time. It is a female figurine, featuring the seated adult wearing a traditional pueblo dress and moccasins. Her hair is tied up in a chonga in the back.
Standing on her lap and wrapped by her arms are three children—all dressed as boys—in a “hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil” posture. The figurine is not dated but is signed Seferina Ortiz, Cochiti, N.M.
The figurine is in very good original condition.
