This is a fine polychrome canteen made by Emma Lewis, the daughter of famed potter Lucy Lewis, and quite well known in her own right. The design depicts a Mimbres lizard executed on white stone-polished slip, the design defined by red- orange and black pigments.

This stylized lizard is clearly referencing the prehistoric Mimbres pictorial tradition, a reverential acknowledgement of the ancient ancestors. The piece is signed on the back, Emma Lewis Acoma.

The right handle has a crack, and a little of the white slip, only on the back, has rubbed off.
