A wonderful image in watercolor on paper by Santana Martinez, wife of Adam Martinez, this painting depicts a male deer dancer in profile, with the plethora of detail so typical of these early San Ildefonso Pueblo artists.
This is a great image, particularly in the posture of the dancer in full motion. Of special note is the great detailing in the embroidery at the kilt bottom. The artist signed the piece in the lower left bottom in ink. It is beautifully framed using all acid-free materials.
Paintings by Santana Martinez are extremely rare. She spent much of her time painting the pottery of Maria Martinez and those she made with Adam, leaving precious little time for her own expression.
