Unquestionably the outstanding Tesuque Pueblo painter and one of the most outstanding of all the pueblo artists was Patrick Swazo Hinds (1929-1974). Adopted at the age of 9 by a California family, Swazo grew up off the reservation but returned every summer to Tesuque. Swazo's early paintings reflect the traditional pueblo style popularized at The Studio, under the direction of Dorothy Dunn.
This painting is dated 1938, and would have been painted when Swazo was only 9 years old. There is some foxing of the paper, but overall the piece is in reasonable condition.
