Popovi Da was the son of Maria and Julian Martinez, and the father of Tony Da. Popovi spent considerable time painting his mom's pottery, so he had little time for easel painting. Occasionally, one comes on the market, as this one has.
Popovi's special skills were in rendering beautiful, balanced, geometric and symbolic images, such as this scene where the male drummer and child are beautifully executed and, at the same time, there is tenderness and respect, demonstrated by the young boy holding the adult's arm.
