Jake Haverstick, his wife Fay, and their two sons moved to Taos, NM around 1930 and to his good fortune, Haverstick met William Herbert Buck Dunton, one of the founders of the Taos Art Society, who took him under his wing and mentored him. The time came that Dunton felt that Haverstick no longer needed his instructions as he was well versed as an artist. The Haversticks then moved from Taos to Albuquerque where they resided for the remainder of their lives.
Most of the residents of Albuquerque, during the 1930s until Haverstick’s death in 1962, knew the Haversticks and purchased his art which was usually framed in handmade frames by his wife Fay. Haverstick had set up a woodworking studio next to his art studio.
This painting which Haverstick entitled “Navajo Country Shower” is exceptional. The technique is a mixture of brush and palette knife. Haverstick captured the big sky of the Navajo Reservation and the relaxed attitude of the Navajo riding horse-back in the large expanse of land devoid of human structures. The rain falling in the background does not appear a threat to the riders.
This painting greatly demonstrates the true talent of Haverstick as an artist, a natural talent recognized by Dunton at the time. It was painted late in his career.
Provenance: The current owner was with her father when he purchased the painting directly from the artist in the 1950s. It has been in the same family since that time.
