A series of fortunate events led to a life as an artist for Fritz Scholder. First, his high school teacher, Oscar Howe, was a professional artist of wide international experience and a great influence on Scholder experimenting with a cubist style. His last year of high school, he moved to California and studied under Wayne Thiebaud, one of the country's leading artists, and was greatly influenced by abstract expressionism. Finally, his move to Santa Fe to teach at the new Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) reinforced his one-fourth Indian heritage and set the stage for his series of Indian paintings.
In the summer of 1970, a company named Tamarind moved to Albuquerque from Los Angeles. It was already well known as America's foremost lithographic workshop for a decade by then. In Albuquerque it was housed in a building adjacent to the campus of the University of New Mexico. Once established in New Mexico, Tamarind selected Fritz Scholder as its first New Mexico artist to produce lithographs at its new facility.
Scholder had a long and productive and very successful career with Tamarind. Over several years, he produced 92 lithographs at Tamarind. Lithography was well suited to the talents of Scholder and he rapidly won international acclaim for his work in that medium.
One of the Tamarind lithographs executed by Scholder is "Patriotic Indian" which he completed in 1975 in this single-color edition of only 50 copies. This is number 33 of 50. It was printed on buff Arches paper by Stephen Britko. It is published in the book "Fritz Scholder Lithographs."
It is framed using all archival materials and the lithograph is floated so that the full extent of the paper is visible. A modern black wood frame complements the image.
