Rachel Curley was an active weaver from the 1940s until she passed away in 2000. She spun her own yarn rather than purchase commercial spun yarn and she continued the tradition of Two Grey Hills patterns. She was known for the fineness of her textiles.
Although this tapestry is less than 2 feet by 2-1/2 feet, Curley was equally adept at making large textiles. In fact, she is famous for weaving one of the largest Two Grey Hills/Toadlena textiles—17 feet 8 inches x 11 feet 7 inches which she completed in 1957 after it was on the loom for over three years.
This small tapestry is spun with the finest hand spun native wool that is not larger in diameter than sewing thread. Curley must have spun the wool over a dozen times to achieve such fineness. The tapestry is of the finest quality and is in original excellent condition.
Provenance: Estate of Evelyn and Herbert Weinstein, Santa Fe.
