This amazing Owl Katsina figure was accomplished using various colors of glass to reflect traditional clothing of the Katsina. He has a buckskin wrap on his chest and an embroidered kilt in front. He wears traditional pueblo moccasins. Frosted glass surrounds the main figure and milky glass was used for the body.
The Great Horned Owl Katsina, as a warrior, is relentless in persecuting the clowns. He stands at the edge of the dance circle while the clowns are performing, and he watches disapprovingly of their antics as they perform their un-Hopi-behavior. Near the end of the dance, a group of Mongwa swoop down on the clowns and beat them with yucca whips, douse them with water, and leave them piled up in the center of the plaza in pain.
Albuquerque artist Terry Brock made this leaded glass window under commission for Adobe Gallery in 1980. It was displayed over a window at the gallery in Old Town Albuquerque from 1980 until the gallery was closed in 2003. Today, it is displayed in the Santa Fe gallery. The leaded glass frame is surrounded by a redwood frame which could be removed or replaced to fit a desired space.
