This 19th century Kiua Polychrome (Cochiti Variety) jar is typical in all technical aspects of manufacture. It has crystalline-rock temper in the paste, rag wiped bentonite slip, a bare-paste underbody with red banding, black rim with red neck interior, and black vegetal paint. The very rounded body is typical of this period.

The design is divided into two distinct bands. First, the “tulip” design around the neck is often associated with Santo Domingo Pueblo, but was frequently used in 19th century Kiua pottery. The main body design is more reminiscent of Cochiti designs. The black cloud-like elements, suspended from the shoulder framing line, are seen on Cochiti vessels of later date.

The rounded vessel body gives this jar a massive, solid look and commands attention. There is a small area of slip loss on one side due to water spillage. It appears the jar was actually used as a water vessel. Otherwise it is in excellent condition.
