Hopi wicker plaque imagery began to change after the arrival of non-Hopi visitors to the pueblo. John Wesley Powell's visit to Oraibi in 1870 was among the first. Market demands by visitors for these plaques as souvenirs began to influence the women to make designs favored by them. It was at this time that katsina masks or full bodied katsina images began to appear.
It is quite possible that the four square images on this plaque are representations of a Long Hair Katsina (Angak.china).
Condition: This plaque is in very good condition with only the normal amount of color fading of the dyes.
