Once Known Native American Carver

This style carving was generally made as a gift to a young girl, and presented to her by a male dancer during a katsina dance. The lack of arms and legs made it easier for a youngster to handle the doll.

This is a particularly colorful representation of the Hornet Katsina. In the full version carving, only the mask would be colorful. This carving appears to be from pre-World War II period.

Barton Wright states that this katsina comes in groups or singly during the Pamuya or the Mixed Katsina Dances, and that there are many examples of this katsina in older collections of dolls and they are bright and colorful.
