Before Katsina Dolls became a popular item to sell to tourist, they were, and still are, made to be presented as gifts to young girls during Hopi ceremonies. Girls were given dolls and boys were given small bow and arrows. This delightful still life depicts the gifts given to children as well as including a ceremonial rattle and images of corn and bean plants. Raymond Naha’s attention to detail along with his fine use of color makes this painting especially captivating.
Provenance: From the personal collection of Frances Balcomb, owner of Balcomb’s Gallery, at one time located in Arizona, then Taos, Gallup, and Albuquerque, but closed since 1976.
