Mansfield has returned to using soft pastel colors on his Katsina dolls, a throwback to the old days, which he probably remembers well as he is in his late 70s now. This Palhikmana flat doll is not totally a flat-board doll as the smaller ones that are made for children. The body is flat but the arms protrude outward and the face is concave. These differences, plus the large size of the doll, are indications that it was made for sale and not as a Katsina gift to a young child.
Condition: Most of the feathers have been removed and a little of the paint has flaked off, particularly the black paint on top of the mask and a little of the peach color on the tableta.
Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.
