Susie Youvella’s family name was Maha and she was from the Hopi village of Sichomovi. She was the mother of Wallace Youvella and mother-in-law of Iris Youvella Nampeyo. I knew her well and enjoyed many years of knowing her and purchasing pottery from her. Since she passed away in the 1990s, I have not seen much of her work on the market. It is a pleasure to be able to post this dish to our site.
The monochromatic design is that of a Sikyatki-style stylized bird with a long beak that may represent an Eagle or Hummingbird. The dish is in remarkable condition. It most likely dates to the 1960s period. It is signed Susie Youvella on the underside.
