According to Barton Wright, the Turkey Katsinas appear in the kivas with the other bird katsinas at night or during the Mixed Dances of late spring. He is not a common katsina and appears at First Mesa only.
This carving by Tawahongva is an all-wood carving and the body appears to be from a single piece of cottonwood, with the arms, body feathers, and leg ties being added features. The body is rendered in beautiful natural proportion. Carving of the fingers and toes is absolutely spectacular as is the carving of the neck feather ruff and the wings feathers. Individual feathers on the body are scored to show natural feather ribs.
The doll was carved in the late 1980s and is in original excellent condition.
