Collectors and her contemporaries admired Sadie Adams. Dextra Nampeyo, one of today’s finest potters, said of her, “Sadie was a really good potter.” She had a long, successful career making and selling pottery on the Reservation. She supported her family in this manner following the death of her husband. According to her daughter, Lorna Lomakema, her mother took her pottery to Lorenzo Hubbell and asked for a loan so her daughter could go to nursing school. She made pots for Hubbell for years as a payback.
The design is that of a Hopi stylized Sikyatki version of a bird. The tile is in excellent condition. The artist’s flower hallmark does not appear on verso, but the MNA price tag indicates that Sadie Adams made it.
