Ho·ote is a popular katsina because of his songs as well as the fact that his appearance forecasts the arrival of spring flowers. The symbols between his eyes and forehead are said to be those of flowers.
Jimmie Koots is a well-known carver of Katsina dolls in the Santa Fe area because his dolls were featured at a shop called Rare Things by Dutton in downtown Santa Fe for years and years. His full name is James Kootshongsie. He had a fascinating life and we have printed biographical information from the book “Hopi Katsina 1,600 Artist Biographies” by Greg Schaaf. To see this biography, click on the artist’s name just below the picture of the Katsina doll.
Provenance: ex. coll. Colorado couple who purchased it on May 17, 1988 from Rare Things by Dutton in Santa Fe.
Attribution: This katsina doll is not signed by the artist, but Koots generally did not sign them. It has the white kaolin-style paint seen on Koots’ dolls and it was purchased from Dutton who represented him here in Santa Fe so we are confident it was made by Jimmy Koots.
