The Hemis and Hemismana are often considered among the most beautiful of the Katsinas. The elaborate mask and headdress of the male along with the beautiful embroidered sash and the red and green sash wrapped around his waist and over his skirt certainly combine to make for a beautiful picture. The female, with her simple manta but elaborate mask and Hopi whorl hair complement the male and together they make an impressive visual statement.
Naha combined the two katsinas into this one painting and showed both to their best advantage. He was very adept as portraying Katsinas at their finest.
This painting has been framed using acid-free materials. It was decided to not use matboard around the image but to leave the painting without embellishments. Spacers were placed between the painting and glass to provide protection to the art. A beautiful dark brown wood frame with inlay designs was chosen.
Provenance: From the personal collection of Frances Balcomb, owner of Balcomb’s Gallery, at one time located in Arizona, then Taos, Gallup, and Albuquerque, but closed since 1976.
