As a young man Rafael Medina (Zia Pueblo) studied the appearance of birds and other animals, which he believed helped him greatly in his artwork. Here he painted the Eagle Dancer, with sweeping motions of his arms and a raised leg just before the dancer swoops almost to the ground and back up again. This earlier work of Medina's is conservative and conventional, unlike his later work, which features vigorous strokes of dark, rich paint.
