Could this be a time before hair dryers arrived on the reservation? Perhaps this young Navajo girl is letting the wind dry her hair after having washed it with yucca root soap. Speculation! There are probably many local customs on the reservation, even today, of which we, as non-residents, are unaware.
Presenting some of these reservation traditions was a life work of Beatien Yazz. Having grown up on the reservation he was witness to what the young people did and he devoted his art career recording these customs; this somewhat makes his art an ethnographic record as well as an art presentation.
Condition: The painting is in original excellent condition. It is shrink-wrapped only, not framed.
Provenance: This painting is among a collection from the Balcomb family, formerly owners of an art gallery which they closed in 1976.
