During the Depression-era, because traditional materials were too expensive or hard to find, artists at Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo used whatever they could find to create jewelry. Sometimes referred to as “found materials” they used plastic from toothbrushes and casings from car batteries. To these they added small precious bits of turquoise.
These earrings are a great example of how artists used whatever they could to create a look that has been popular since prehistoric times. Black, red and white “found materials” surround small pieces of turquoise in drop style earrings. They are in great shape.
They would be an excellent addition to the classic Depression-era necklace #25172.
