This is a very nice serving bowl from Zia Pueblo, created most probably in the 1940s. This fine piece was coil-formed of native clay with the addition of crushed basaltic temper. The underbody bare paste was stone-polished to a warm brick red color. A narrow red band was wiped on as a dividing line between the bare paste underbody and the decorated upper body. The design field was slipped in a creamy white slip over which was painted the design. Some of the design has been abraded away, but that is normal for a piece of this age.
