Occasionally one sees a piece of pottery, which just stands out from the normal variety. This is the case with this Zia Pueblo large serving bowl. This vessel is traditional in every sense of the word in material, shape and decorations. It is the shape of the vessel, however, with its very wide opening and shallow walls, which is unusual. It does lend itself to easy serving of food.

There is an extremely wide dark red band just below the decorated area. The width of this band would suggest a date of 1880 or so. The surface wear of the decorated area would add credence t this date, however, the almost lack of wear on the interior is a contradiction.

The exterior decoration of tilted, stacked, parallelograms, although not rare, is not seen often on bowls. It’s refreshing to see something a little different. The bowl is in very good condition.
