This wonderful late 19th century storage jar from Cochiti is testament to the fine pottery vessels that were made at that pueblo prior to the almost complete conversion to making figurative pottery. It has a wonderful rounded body with the widest diameter being at mid-body and a short neck culminating at the rim.

The vessel body is beautifully and simply decorated with geometric and floral elements. The main body decorations appear to the eye as black-on-white, as they were meant to be. The continuous serpentine design on the neck appears as white-on-black; however, the applied design is the minimal amount of black paint which sets off the serpentine as the intended design.

The jar has a black rim and double framing lines at the shoulder and below the body design. All framing lines feature ceremonial breaks. A 2-inch red band was wiped on under the lower framing lines as was customary on 19th century vessels.

Condition: There were cracks sustained during shipment of the jar to the previous owner. Apparently, the cracks were just that, cracks, and no sections of the vessel were dislodged. The cracks were professionally repaired and are not visible to the naked eye. The jar is now in beautiful condition.
