This is Cordero’s version of a Mountain Sheep or Ram. Perhaps she was inspired by the re-entry of this animal in the Sandia Mountains just east of Albuquerque some 20 years ago. The figurine is signed Damacia Cordero.
Cordero was one of the most prolific figurine potters of the 20th century, yet her pieces are some of the most sought after. She made figurines with more character and expression than most potters, and she made dinosaurs, kangaroos and other non-native characters. Her figurines generally are dark from a deliberate smoking during the firing process. This gives them a much older appearance that they actually are.
This figurine is in original excellent condition. There is no apparent damage of any sort.
