Damacia Cordero was among the earliest of the potters at Cochiti Pueblo to make Storyteller and Singing Mother figurines. She had been making human and animal figures for over fifty years when she turned to storytellers in the 1970s and 1980s. Her animal figures are as recognizable as her storytellers. She made native New Mexico animals but seemed to enjoy making non-New Mexico animalitos such as kangaroos, rhinos, leopards, etc.
Provenance: This Pottery Figurine of a Dancing Bear was shown in the exhibit Damacia Cordero March 5, 2007 until March 26, 2007 presented at adobe gallery Santa fe.
Part of the charm of Damacia Cordero’s figurines is guessing what animal or bird she had in mind when making it. This one, at first, appeared to be a dog, but the wing-like appendages seem to negate that thought. An otter? A beaver? Any Damacia Cordero aficionados have a suggestion?
