Figurine pottery has always been a tradition at Cochiti. Long before other pueblos were producing figurative pottery, Cochiti was in the forefront. Frogs seem to have been a favorite by a number of potters there.
This frog has a wide-open mouth and prominent eyes. On his back and under his open mount are painted rain clouds—what one would expect to see on a water creature. This piece probably dates to the 1950s.
The round red pedestal is separate from the frog figurine. An open area between the frog’s hands facilitates air entering the vessel and the open mouth allows the incense smoke to escape into the air. There is evidence that the piece has been used in the past. It is in excellent condition, however.
Provenance: from the personal collection of Alexander E. Anthony, Jr.
