Figurine pottery has always been a tradition at Cochiti. Long before other pueblos were producing figurative pottery, Cochiti was in the forefront. Frogs seem to have been a favorite by a number of potters there.
The round red pedestal is separate from the frog figurine. An open area between the frog figurine. An open area between the frog’s hands facilitates air entering the vessel and the open mouth allows the incense smoke to escape into the air. There is evidence that the piece has been used in the past. It is in excellent condition, however.
Provenance: From the estate of Transcendental artist Florence Pierce of Albuquerque who passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.
