We have attributed this wonderful bowl to Nampeyo of Hano based on several features. First, the incurving rim with a slight flexure on the inside is typical of her construction technique. Second, this most unusual design is reminiscent of a Sikyatki design. Of course, Sikyatki pottery was the inspiration for much of Nampeyo's work.
The piece was constructed with a lug on the backside whose function is to facilitate hanging the piece for display. The lug is still in excellent condition and is functional.
The design is somewhat a whirlwind but appears to feature bird tail feathers—a most unusual concept. The band on the interior just below the rim is almost ½-inch thick and does not appear to have a ceremonial break.
The design is rather faint in color—most probably from the original firing, not from wear. There is residue of a paper label. I am confident this was one of the Fred Harvey Company paper labels that were affixed to Nampeyo pieces.
The bowl is in extraordinary condition for a piece of this age. Its only shortcoming is the faintness of the design elements.
