This small 19th century bowl from Tesuque Pueblo is traditional in every aspect of construction and design. The paste is very typical Tewa material, tan in color and fibrous in texture, with some crystalline sand grains as usual in Tesuque pottery.
The interior is slipped with cream-colored clay and then stone-polished. Applied over the slip is a stepped element comprised of three parallel black lines, the uppermost one with vertical black lines. This design follows the interior of the bowl around its circumference with one notable ceremonial break through the entire design element.
The exterior design also is comprised of stepped elements of three parallel lines, but lacking the vertical lines evident on the interior design.
The exterior was slipped in cream-colored clay but only to the point of the lower framing line. Below that point is the unslipped and polished natural clay.
The bowl is in remarkable condition. There are no cracks, chips, or restoration.
