Black-on-black Feather Design Plate signed Maria/Popovi 964 [SOLD]

This beautiful Black-on-black plate by Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da, has a complete circle of feathers radiating outward from a circle in the center of the plate. This feather design is one created by Julian Martinez after having seen a photograph of a Mimbres polychrome bowl with this design on the interior. The two-dimensional photograph of the interior of the bowl made the bowl appear to be a flat or nearly flat dish, so Julian painted the design on plates.

The plate is signed Maria/Popovi 964, indicating that it was made by Maria and painted by Popovi Da in September 1964. According to Spivey, Popovi Da started working with his mom in 1956 and started adding dates to their work in 1959. He passed away in 1971.

Condition: The plate is in original excellent condition. It is difficult to find examples of this age without a significant number of scratches to the surface.
