During the late 19th and very early 20th centuries, two sisters at Santo Domingo Pueblo were producing the finest traditional pottery ever made there. Vessel shapes, designs, and execution were unequaled. They were creative in their designs, yet they adhered to tradition. Although none of their pieces were signed, their work is so distinctive; we can give hem credit today for their masterpieces.
This jar glows with patina, a trait of the old Santo Domingo cream slip. The deep black paint, derived from the Rocky Mountain bee plant, stands out in contrast to the cream slip. A ceremonial break bisects the entire design except for the solid black rim. Red slip on the inner rim and on the underbody completes the decoration.
