The Aguilar sisters were undoubtedly the finest potters at Santo Domingo at the beginning of the last century. It may be true that they were the best potters of all times.
Their jars were tall and graceful with high shoulders and striking designs. The workmanship in vessel construction and painting was unequalled.
Generally their jars were the same dimension in height and width. The shoulder is about ¾ of the way up from the base, and the neck is concave, ending up at a dramatic flared rim. The interior of the neck and the underbody are slipped in red clay, and the rim is black.
Several framing lines separate the three bands of decoration. The designs are simple but extremely bold. That seems to be a key to their identity.
