The Aguilar sisters were exceptional potters at Santo Domingo Pueblo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They made extraordinarily beautiful jars that were rather tall, had a high shoulder and a rolled out rim.
One look at their jars immediately alerts one to the fact that they are from Santo Domingo, yet, there is a quality about them that was not common at that time. They are elegant in shape and beautiful in decoration.
The shoulders of their jars are generally at approximately 75% of the total height. The neck occupies the remaining 25%. The diameter at the widest part is the same as the height of the jar.
Most often, as in this one, the neck has two distinct decorating bands separated by framing lines. Ceremonial breaks are generally quite prominent.
The artists never signed their jars but their work is well documented and easily recognizable.
