Felipita Aguilar Garcia was the inspiration behind a quiet revolution in pottery designs at Santo Domingo Pueblo between 1905 and 1914. She, and her sister, Asunción Aguilar Caté, developed a new style of pottery design. Felipita favored the strong black with thin cream lines and Asunción favored the black and red with thin cream lines.
This jar has a single design field from the rim down to the red underbody. A cream framing line encircles the upper neck and a black one separates the deign field from the red underbody. A black rim and red interior complete the design. The bold black areas outlined by thin lines make a major statement on what one sees as a rather simple design. It is the stark simplicity that makes the impact. This jar was probably made in the 1910-1914 period, as that is when Felipita mastered the technique and ceased working. Note: two minor rim chips have been repaired. A prior restoration photograph is available.
