The Rio Grande blanket was the most commonly produced and widely distributed of the nineteenth-century New Mexican Spanish goods. It had been woven in the area for three centuries and was a staple of the economy and a necessity for survival. It was used locally and traded nationally and internationally.

These Spanish blankets were woven longer than wide, and were mostly woven in two narrow sections that were then sewn together. In the early blankets, stripes were the predominant style. They were woven mostly in the northern New Mexico villages between Santa Fe and Taos.

This blanket consists of a wool weft on a cotton warp, consists of two sections sewn together, and is multi-colored with aniline dyes. It is in excellent condition.
