This striking Modernist composition by Michael Kabotie showcases abstract shapes and forms that echo throughout his works from this period. At left of center is an abstracted depiction of a bowl of stacked corn, symbolizing an offering, with a katsina figure and tablita form rising from its left. The untitled nature of the piece invites personal interpretation, allowing viewers to engage deeply with its layered imagery. Kabotie's approach to visual art mirrors the rhythm and repetition of music, creating a harmonious balance of form and meaning. As one of the more abstract artists of his era, Kabotie holds a prominent place in Native American painting, paving the way for future trailblazers like Helen Hardin and Tony Abeyta.

The painting is signed Lomawywesa and dated 1990 in the bottom left corner. Michael Kabotie, also known as Lomawywesa, was the son of celebrated Hopi artist Fred Kabotie. His artistic foundation was shaped by early training in silversmithing at the Hopi Guild workshop, founded by his father. Kabotie excelled in both painting and jewelry-making, gaining widespread acclaim before his untimely passing at 67. A leading figure in Native American art, he was an influential voice for the Artist Hopid group in the 1970s and 1980s, a collective that included luminaries like Terrance Talaswaima, Milland Lomakema, Delbridge Honanie, and Neil David, Sr.
