This handmade and hand painted book cover was made by a student of the Santa Fe Indian School most likely in the 1930s era. Inside the book cover is a tag that reads:
“Hand-made book cover. Made by student Santa Fe Indian School. Hand painted. Pearl Hobson Collection. Given to me by Eva Naranjo.”
On the back of the tag, a description reads:
“Design – conventional or what might be called ‘modernistic’ conception of the Katchina mask. Also clouds, lightening and rain design at top And bottom corners.”
Condition: There are some stains on the cover and some of the paint is abraded, but overall, it is in remarkable condition for its age.
Provenance: From the estate of Hilda Street, Santa Fe.
