Before the introduction of glass beads, Iroquois women decorated their family’s clothing with bone, shell and stone beads. Dyed porcupine quills and moose hair were also attached to clothing in intricate patterns. They were colored with natural dyes. When glass beads were introduced from Europe, more designs in more colors were then possible.
Interactions between Europeans and Native American spurred innovative changes, including changes in fashion. The Glengarry cap, which is a part of traditional Scottish Highland dress, was transformed by Native American craftswomen into a colorful and richly beaded item. The Iroquois, living near Niagara Falls, were making these by the mid-1800s.
This Iroquois cap is in extraordinary condition. Both the felt and silk lining are near perfect. There is some very minor wear to the ribbon. There are no missing beads.
