Seferina Bell was one of the few potters working in the mid-20th century at Zia Pueblo who signed her pottery. Her signature is an outline drawing of a bell and Zia Pueblo. She did not sign her name along with the bell drawing. Her pottery reflects that she was a very good potter. The vessel walls are thick as is the custom at Zia. Generally, the cream slip is stone polished as is the red underbody. She had a variety of bird styles and the ones featured on this jar are typical of her work from the 1940s-1950s.
Many of her birds have their heads turned upward and the birds float on the design panel and are not resting on branches as most potters present their birds.
Condition: very good condition with minor abrasion to the painted areas
