Juanita Shije was originally from Acoma Pueblo and married and moved to Zia Pueblo.  One might be tempted to accept that she used white Acoma clay because of her association with Acoma but this jar is certainly commercially-made greenware, not handmade from Acoma clay.

It is the first greenware pottery I have seen from Zia and am surprised to know of it, particularly from an elderly potter.

Lanmon and Harlow mention in The Pottery of Zia Pueblo that "Juanita Shije, an Acoma Indian by birth who married into Zia and is making pottery in Zia style decorates and fires greenware.  To our knowledge she is the only Zia potter who uses greenware..."

Condition:  Structurally, the jar is in excellent condition.  There is some abrasion of the painted areas and the white clay shows in those areas.

Provenance:  ex. coll. Frances Sonnenberg, Santa Fe resident.
