This is one of the most impressive Zia dough bowls that I recall ever seeing and we have been handling dough bowls for over 30 years.  This one was beautifully constructed and expertly painted.  The design is the one seen on almost all Zia dough bowls from the late 1800s.  The design is typical for the period 1880 – 1890.

The design is typically divided into two segmentsone long and one short and square.  The long panel has a wide orange band that goes under and then over black design areas.  The two panels of this type are separated by the shorter ones that feature black designs that outline heart-shaped elements in cream color.  The interior is stone-polished red slip.

The historic pottery dough bowl (for making bread) is just amazingly beautiful.  It would be difficult to find another one of the same time period that was any better.

Condition: excellent condition
