This is a very typical Taos Pueblo cooking pot, constructed of local micaceous clay and devoid of decoration.  It has been smudged black from use.  The rolled-out neck with fluted rim is very typical of older Taos cooking pots and is still seen in contemporary versions today.

This micaceous pottery originated in the mid-1500s and is still being made in the same manner today at both Taos and Picuris Pueblos.  The micaceous clay is so rich in mica that a tempering agent is not required.  It has been stated that there is no better bean cooking pot than a micaceous one.

Condition: very good condition for a utilitarian vessel

Provenance: from the collection of a Santa Fe resident
