Margaret and Luther Gutierrez, Santa Clara Pueblo Potters

Margaret (b.1936) and Luther (1911-1987) Gutierrez were the children of Lela and Van Gutierrez. Working together, the siblings continued the polychrome style of painting begun by their parents. Sometimes their work is whimsical and other times it is most elegant. This owl effigy figurine is both whimsical and elegant. The treatment of the eyes expresses the adage of a wise owl through seeing all and missing nothing. An Avanyu is painted on the front body with a bug peering out from the Avanyu’ s body. Condition: The owl figurine is in original excellent condition Provenance: from an Albuquerque gentleman Recommended Reading: Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery by Rick Dillingham
