facial close upChaveyo and Hahai-i-Wuhti are the parents of the dreaded ogres known as Nataskas. Chaveyo, himself, is dreaded as his function is to show any Hopi who fails to perform his share of work or who acts in an unacceptable manner the error of his ways. He appears in dances at all the Hopi villages. Wright, 1973

This Katsina carving is very well executed with proper body proportions and good stance. The katsina stands tall and proud with shoulders held back in a stance of authority.  He is dressed in a red velveteen blouse and fabric trousers.  Red leather upper portions of the moccasins wrap around the legs.  He wears a leather concha belt with metal discs representing silver conchas.  It is unusual to see Hopi carvings dressed in fabric clothing but there was a time before the 1970s that this was done on a regular basis.

Condition:  He appears to be from a single piece of cottonwood root, with the appendages and clothing added. He is in very good condition.

Provenance: from the personal collection of Chuck and Jan Rosenak, collectors of Native art and authors of The People Speak: Navajo Folk Art, 1994
