Diné (Navajo) Original Painting Going to Squaw Dance Fine Art Native American Paintings Paintings Diné Navajo Beatien Yazz Little No Shirt Jimmy Toddy verso

It is easy to conclude that an artist is familiar with the subject matter he presents in a painting.  Beaten Yazz was very knowledgeable of the daily events that occur on the Navajo Reservation, since he lived there all of his life.  He started painting as a preschooler while hanging out at the Reservation trading post where the traders provided him with paper and paints and let him be creative without interference or instruction.

This painting of two Navajo young women riding their horses and chatting while on their way to the Squaw Dance is typical of an event on the Reservation in early days.  The girls are dressed in their finest clothes, each with a blanket draped across her lap in preparation for the cool evening air.  Each horse has a Navajo saddle blanket under the saddle—blankets probably woven by the girls themselves.

This painting was painted as a companion piece to one entitled "Going to the Rodeo" which is our item number C3242A (click here to see now).
